Smoke Detectors

Guest article written by Rob Stone

The protection of yourself and your family is the most important consideration in your life. Inside the home the threat of fire or smoke must be treated with the utmost care. Smoke detectors whatever they might cost are simply the most essential of items. It is also paramount that not only do you have an ample number of them but that they are maintained properly.

Smoke detectors are the epitome of home improvements and if you have moved to a new house with none in existence then get straight down to the local supplier before you do anything else. The detectors will act as a safety precaution if they are installed properly. They will provide the entire family with a recognized alarm and enable everyone to move to safety.

Most of us with alarms just have one in the hall and one on the ceiling on the landing. This is totally inefficient. There should be one near to your sleeping area and if there is more than one sleeping area then buy a multiple detector. There should be at least one on every floor of your home and if you have a basement then include it. Position the detectors high up on the wall(s) as smoke rises. Make sure they are not near things like curtains or furniture as this could inhibit their ability to work properly.

The primary decision before you buy is whether to get detectors with a battery system or ones that operate through wall wiring. The strong recommendation is to get ones with a wire wiring but with a back-up system operated by batteries. In a power cut the wall wiring might fail along with the electrics. It is essential that you keep a good supply of spare batteries because you can bet your life it will start to die in the middle of the night. About once a month it is worth testing the detectors to ensure they are all working properly and that the batteries are still okay.

The best port of call to buy a smoke detector is via the internet although local home decoration shops or warehouses will be able to supply you but at probably more expense. The internet can give a far more extensive choice where you can compare them and decide which is the best for you. Although they are not that expensive anyone on a low income can probably get help from the Fire Service who may be able to offer free assistance. Consider putting an alarm in the garage as well also any outhouse. Both these buildings can be burnt to the ground before you realise it.
